The abdomen is one of the regions of the body that suffers the most from weight changes, aging, physical inactivity and for women in particular due to the changes caused by pregnancy.

Many are unable to reach their desired outcome merely from diet and exercise alone because excess skin and the separation of the abdominal muscles can only be corrected through surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tummy Tuck in Mexico

What are the steps to surgery?

During the consultation, the surgeon will listen very carefully to your goals and final expectations of this surgery.

In the examination, the surgeon will assess not only your skin but also to the extent your muscles are separated underneath the skin to determine the exact surgery you will need. They will also go over whether you may need additional treatment such as liposuction to complete your goals.

Second, you will need to undergo medical examinations to determine your health status. These examinations include lab work and a preoperative cardiac evaluation. The third step is the surgeon will take pictures to evaluate the areas of concern and further will advise on the procedures recommended, details about those procedures including incisions and where they will be located, risks of surgery, pre-operative and post-operative care, as well as recovery time. Following this discussion, we will schedule a surgery date and you will be given the necessary information to prepare.

How long will my recovery take?
Recovery is gradual, and it is very important to start to walk as soon as possible. You will begin to feel better after the first week and you can return to your normal activities two weeks after surgery.

Usually, patients can use half-heeled shoes in the third week, drive after one month and begin returning to an exercise routine after 6 weeks.

How long will your procedure take and what type of anesthesia used?
The surgery time will be approximately 3-5 hours.

The type of anesthesia we use is light sedation typically known as “twilight” sedation plus an epidural spinal block. You will stay in the hospital one night and the surgeon will do a follow up with you before leaving the hospital. In addition, your next follow-up appointment will be scheduled.

What will my incisions look like?

The incisions for this procedure can be in one of two areas.  Either in the bottom half of the areola like a half-moon shape which is ultimately virtually invisible or the other option is in the crease of the breast underneath and is about 4 cm in length.  This type is also virtually undetectable after healing as the scar is hidden by either a bra or bikini.

When will I see my final results?
You will see a noticeable difference in the shape of your body almost immediately after surgery. However, the improvement will continue to be more evident after three weeks, when a large amount of the swelling has subsided. After six months, you will be able to see the final result. By eating a healthy diet and maintaining regular exercise, the shape will remain permanent.
What are the associated risk factors of abdominoplasty surgery?
Common risk factors are patients over 40 years, prolonged surgery, oral contraceptive use, smoking and obesity. It is very important to assess your health condition in advance and to analyze it with your doctor. The most common risks are seroma and skin irregularities. Other risks that are rare include deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
